How to cook Soup for Sinus / Sensitive Nose / 鼻子敏感汤 (Step by Step)
Do you usually wake up, having spells of sneezing, accompanied with a runny nose in the morning, due to Sinus / Sensitive nose?
Sinus can be genetic. People with sinus are sensitive to dust, dirt and plant / flower pollen. In Singapore, sinus problems are more persistent than recurrent because of its tropical climate. Apart from eating Western medicine, keeping the house spic and span from dust and dirt, the other remedy would be to drink some Chinese herbal soup to build up the immune system.
This Sinus / sensitive nose soup that I will be introducing, can help to build up our immune system, combat fatigue and reduce spontaneous sweating (eg sweaty palms or people who will still sweat profusely even during cool weather).
1. Health Benefits of Beiqi / 北芪 (Astragalus Root):-
A super herb. It improves the immune system by strengthening the lungs and spleen. It improves Qi or Energy, warms the body and helps with water retention. This herb has anti-inflammatory properties.
2. Health Benefits of Baishu / 白术 (Atractylodes Rhizome):-
A magic herb for longevity. It helps the digestive system, dispel pathogenic dampness, and restores energy balance. It is used to treat night sweating, edema, poor appetite, diarrhea, and to prevent miscarriages.
3. Health Benefits of Fangfeng / 防风 (Radix Saposhnikoviae):-
A kind of Chinese medicine with the effect of rheumatism dehumidification, dehumidification pain relief, liver de-spasms, insecticidal itching effect.
4. Health Benefits of Gancao / 甘草 (Radix Glycyrrhizae):-
It is good for sputum cough, phlegm or mucus from the lungs or sinuses. It also acts as anti-diurectic.
5. Health Benefits of Shashen / 沙滲 (Radix Glehniae):-
It helps to clear heat, moisturize sputum and benefit stomach.
6. Health Benefits of Haizhu / 海竹 (Polygonatum Root):-
It helps to replenish energy, strengthen the spleen and nourish kidneys.
7. Health Benefits of Maidong / 麦冬 (Radix Ophiopogonis):-
It nourishes Yin, stomach & heart, moisturises lung, promotes the production of body fluid and clears away heat. Used to treat cough with thick sputum, dryness of the throat and mouth, constipation, diabetes. Relieves fever, restlessness and insomnia caused by heart problems.
8. Food to Avoid for Sinus:-
Avoid dairy if you have had previous episodes of sinus infections. Also, try to avoid refined sugar as it increases the production of mucus. Other foods to avoid include tomatoes, chocolate, Milo, cheese, gluten, and fruits like bananas, which can cause congestion.
9. Food that Fight Against Sinus:-
Vitamins and minerals, colourful fruits and vegetables. Examples: apricots, strawberries, rock melons, red and green peppers, kale, parsley, broccoli, dark leafy vegetables, honey and garlic.
10. Tips: For best results, you may drink it once weekly or at least twice a month. It can be a family soup for normal health maintenance as well.
11. Notes: Maidong might not be suitable for young kids, pregnant women or people who are born with cold spleen and stomach. Hence, you may want to exclude adding Maidong in your soup. You also need to have a 2 hour gap when drinking Chinese Herbal soup/product and taking Western medicine, drug or supplement.
